Just a speck on the page

God loves each of us as if there were only one of us. ~ St. Augustine

Do not run away! We are looking at the Hebrew, Greek and English language today but I promise it is for a purpose that will encourage the socks off of you. Stay with me!

The Jot is the Hebrew word Yodh which is the 10th letter of the Hebrew alphabet. It is also the smallest letter.  The actual word, jot, is the English  translation of iota, the ninth letter, and the smallest letter of the Greek alphabet. And iota is the closest equal in Greek for the Hebrew yodh.
The tittle is the little fancy mark on the upper edge of yodh. Tittle is just the little lines or fancy marks that make the Hebrew letters different.

That seems like a lines of useless information but we sure use these little nothings quite a bit in our everyday conversation.

We say phrases such as, “…the dotting of the i and the crossing of the t.” Or, “It doesn’t matter one iota!” And now you know why.

Maybe you are thinking that none of this matters for eternity. Well, it does, in a sense. These little specks on a page are just that to some people, specks on a page. But to the English language today? They are quite important; they matter.

And so do we.

Do you realize in this vast universe that we are just mere grains of sand in comparison to the enormous population of Planet Earth? According to the World Clock, which is clicking away like you wouldn’t believe, the current population is 7,401,889,558 and it was changing every second that I was on the website. So now when you click this link, it will be totally different. Go ahead, you won’t lose your place, I promise it opens in a new tab.

Did you notice:

  • 233,367 Births today
  • 97,728 Deaths today
  • 135,639 Population Growth today
  • 17,486,929 Births this year
  • 7,323,269 Deaths this year

If you love statistics, these are some pretty fascinating ones! And if you can stand just a teeny bit more, the site shares this:

“…whereas it had taken all of human history until around 1800 for world population to reach one billion, the second billion was achieved in only 130 years (1930), the third billion in less than 30 years (1959), the fourth billion in 15 years (1974), and the fifth billion in only 13 years (1987).

  • During the 20th century alone, the population in the world has grown from 1.65 billion to 6 billion.
  • In 1970, there were roughly half as many people in the world as there are now.
  • Because of declining growth rates, it will now take over 200 years to double again.”

Just a speck on the page

Yikes! What did I tell you? Specks on a page.

But not to our God. Look at some of the ways He tells us we are important to Him:

“Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten before God. Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows.” Luke 12:6,7

“But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8

“Because you are precious in my eyes, and honored, and I love you, I give men in return for you, peoples in exchange for your life.” Isaiah 43:4

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.” Jeremiah 1:5

It is difficult to trust someone that you do not know, it is impossible to be sure they have your best interest at heart. But when you KNOW that person, when you are acquainted with them on a personal basis…you can rest in the comfort that they also KNOW YOU, and, when you know that, “The Lord delights in those who fear him, who put their hope in his unfailing love.” Psalms 147:11 NIV, then you walk differently, you act differently and hopefully you react differently. All because of Who you know.

You are not just a speck on the page! You are beautifully and wonderfully made! The Lord has great plans for you and delights over you with unfailing love.

Can you believe that today? That you are just as important to the God of the universe as any one of the other seven billion and He is not too busy with any of you to take time for the other? Ever.

And how do we know all of this? How do we know it is true?

His Word.

Leave with this thought today: The Jewish scribes who meticulously copied the text of the Hebrew Bible scrolls, were so particular to detail that they fretted over every little dot and mark represented in the text. Did you know they even numbered every letter, every single word, even the sentences and paragraphs and chapters, so on and so forth, just to  make double sure that the total equaled that of the text being copied before they would allow it to pass?

Mind boggling but , For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.” Matthew 5:18.

Everything will be fulfilled, according to His Word. Everything. You, that little speck on the page, matter a great deal to the God of the heavens. And as the Hebrew scholars numbered every single dot on the page, this Jesus, this God in the flesh, has every hair on your head numbered and cares about you more than the little sparrow that He feeds every day.

when i'm no longer a slave to fear

When I’m no longer a slave to fear

#FiveMinuteFriday and today’s word prompt is When. I hope you will be free from worry and fear when you pray this prayer and be blessed by the words of the song of the same name. Don’t skip the song!

“From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I. For thou hast been a shelter for me, and a strong tower from the enemy.” Psalm 61:2,3.

It is overwhelming to be on this planet Earth at this period in time. Wars and rumors of more wars abound. People are going hungry, even in the wealthiest nation in the world. The terrorism threat is real, it is very real. Violence, anger, civil unrest, are all common every day occurrences all around the world. We can easily be overwhelmed and our heart beats faster, even seems to skip a beat, all because of fear and worry.

When. At what time. Referring to a time or circumstance.
Overwhelmed. Bury or drown beneath a big mass. Defeat completely.
Heart. The central or innermost part of something.
Slave. A person who is the legal property of another and is forced to obey them.

Fear and worry consume us until we are crippled. This keeps us from being joyful and from doing the will of God. It is Satan’s most effective weapon. It ties our hands and keeps our mind running in a thousand directions just trying to figure a way out of our situation, whatever it may be. “The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, ‘Abba, Father.'” Romans 8:15.

We belong to Him! We are sons and daughters of the King!

when i'm no longer a slave to fear

When. But when we turn that fear over to our God, at what time we decide to let it go, we can instantly be free from its grip and its choke hold. Stop what we are doing and take control with the Word of God, turning the enemy on his heels to run like the devil.

Overwhelmed. When we are defeated, completely defeated, seemingly drowning under the heaviest load we could have imagine, we stop. We grab the Word of God and use it as our defense. We call on the Name of Jesus, the only One who can literally save us, and let Him be our defense! Let Him fight our battles, allow the God who created the heavens and the earth to undo the mess, fix the problem, or pick us up and carry us through.

Heart. It is our innermost everything. It carries all of our worries and fears and our happies and sad’s. (I know I made those words up. Yay, me!) When we keep all of these fears and worries bottled up in our hearts they can drag us down and keep us bound.

Slave. Personal property of another, forced to obey. Satan is a master slave driver. It is not the will of God we stay bound to this enemy! The Bible says to “Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” James 4:7 NIV. Submit to God first, then resist! Use the Word of God, he has to obey.

So here is a little prayer for you when you decide you are no longer afraid of fear. Pray it outloud, print it out and post it on your fridge!

At what time the innermost part of me is drowning beneath a big mass and I feel completely defeated, lead me to the rock that is higher than I am. You have always been my shelter and a tower, a strong refuge that keeps me safe from the enemy. You have never left me, never forsaken me and even though I feel as if I am being buried alive because of my circumstance, I trust You. I believe all things will work together for my good and even if I cannot see it now, I will not live here forever.

My son introduced me to this amazing song this week. When you listen to it, be forever blessed. I promise it will strengthen you. I’m no longer a slave to fear…

Mr. Lincoln, today is your birthday

Growing up in a small town elementary school in the 60’s meant big celebrations. We celebrated Christmas, and we were allowed to call it Christmas. We decorated for Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Easter, and all four seasons. I can fondly remember my teacher in each grade changing out the bulletin boards and putting up matching alphabet cutouts for each new quarter.

But one of my favorite holidays was President’s Day. I loved Mr. Washington and Mr. Lincoln. They were bigger than life to a tiny, single-digit little girl in southern Indiana. I could hardly contain myself to think that the 16th president of the United States of America actually LIVED nearby ME 100 years before? Holy Top Hat, Batman!

I remember clearly the presidential silhouettes of Lincoln and Washington in our classroom. There was so much respect, honor and dignity associated with those two heroes. We were taught to be appreciative of what they had done to shape this great nation. There was no one to tell me otherwise, I wouldn’t have cared that they weren’t perfect, I would have still been in awe that the good they had accomplished meant that I lived in freedom.

Sixteenth president. Preserved the Union during the Civil War and brought about the Emancipation Proclamation, setting countless thousands free.

Perfect? Most certainly not. Controversial to some? Certainly. This post isn’t about controversy; it’s an abbreviated look at a man who seems to have learned to rely on Almighty God through experience and tragedy.

Abraham Lincoln experienced much misfortune and heartbreak in his shortened life. His brother, Thomas, died as an infant. When Abraham was nine, his mother Nancy passed away of milk sickness at the age of only 34. Before he could become properly engaged to Anne Rutledge, typhoid fever entered New Salem and Anne died…at 22 years old. Lincoln married Mary Todd in 1842 and they had four children together, only one of them, Robert, grew to adulthood. (Eddie died in 1850 of tuberculosis; Willie died of a fever in 1862. Tad died of heart failure at the age of 18, in 1871.)

Inaugurated to the presidency in March, 1861, and by April, Fort Sumter, South Carolina, was already under siege, the beginnings of America’s most deadly conflict.

Nancy Todd Lincoln, in her grief over the death of Willie, only 11, turned to New Age mediums hoping they could help her cope with the loss. Lincoln? He sought out Phineas Gurley who was pastor of the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church in Washington where the Lincoln’s regularly attended.

When Lincoln assumed the presidency, he said, “I was brought to a living reflection that nothing in my power whatever would succeed without the direct assistance of the Almighty. I have often wished that I was a more devout man than I am. Nevertheless, amid the greatest difficulties of my Administration, when I could not see any other resort, I would place my whole reliance on God, knowing that all would go well, and that He would decide for the right.”

Dr. James Smith, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Springfield where President and Mrs. Lincoln attended for many years before moving to Washington, said this about the President’s faith:

“Dr. Smith explained how he provided Lincoln with a copy of his book and during this time Smith had been praying for a period of weeks that “the Spirit of Truth might lead him into the kingdom of Truth. And such was the result … Lincoln came forth from this examination … a believer in God, in His Providential government, in His Son, the way, the truth and the life. And from that time [nearly seven years] to this day, Lincoln’s life has proved the genuineness of his conversion to the Christian faith.”

Today, there is hardly any celebration for President Lincoln’s birthday. Only four remaining states actually celebrate his birthday on its date. Presidents Day, as we call it, only commemorates Washington’s Birthday; there is technically no national holiday called Presidents Day. The third Monday in February is the date set aside for the federal Washington’s Birthday holiday under the Uniform Monday Holiday Act of 1971.

Did you know more states celebrate Black Friday (the day after Thanksgiving, the holiday instituted by Lincoln) than Lincoln’s birthday?

Here is some interesting Lincoln trivia for you:

  • He was the only president to have a patent: Lincoln invented a device to free steamboats that ran aground.
  • He practiced law without a degree.
  • He wanted women to have the vote in 1836.
  • Lincoln loved to eat oysters.
  • He used the telegraph like email to communicate with generals.
  • He loved to wrestle!
  • Lincoln’s cat ate at the White House dinner table. (Disgust!)
  • His dog was named Fido; cat was named Tabby.
  • He read the Bible every day.
  • He didn’t drink, smoke, or chew.
  • He didn’t have a middle name and he hated being called Abe.
  • Lincoln established Thanksgiving as a national holiday.
  • Grave robbers tried to steal Lincoln’s body in 1876.
  • He was photographed with John Wilkes Booth at his second inauguration.
  • Lincoln kept his important documents inside his hat.
  • He was the first president with a beard.
  • Lincoln’s shoe size was between 12 and 14.
  • His coffin has been opened five times.
  • Lincoln didn’t attend his father’s funeral.
  • Ulysses S. Grant was to be his guest at Ford’s Theater. He cancelled at the last minute.

So, happy 206th birthday, Mr. President. You weren’t perfect by any means…come to think of it I do not know any perfect people here on this earth and I certainly cannot start the club. But for all you did to make this country great, we thank you.

“Trusting in Him, who can go with me, and remain with you and be every where for good, let us confidently hope that all will yet be well. To His care commending you, as I hope in your prayers you will commend me, I bid you an affectionate farewell.”
Farewell Address on February 11, 1861
