Does Jesus even care about our New Year’s Resolutions? Let’s dive in!

“Let us examine our ways and test them, and let us return to the Lord…” Lamentations 3:40.

It’s resolution time. Res·o·lu·tion

rezəˈlo͞oSH(ə)n/ noun    a firm decision to do or not to do something

The making of New Year’s resolutions is said to go way back to the Babylonians. You may remember the people that tried to build the tower to Heaven? They supposedly wanted to start the New Year off right so they made all kinds of promises to each other to earn favor with the gods they served. They would promise to repay debts owed, return things that they had borrowed to their neighbor, lose weight and even vow to be nicer if need be. Well, maybe I added in a few current century resolutions there. Writer’s privilege. (smile)

Over 4,000 years ago, in ancient Babylon, festivals were held to welcome the New Year. The first new moon after the vernal equinox, (that day in March when we have equal amounts of sunlight and darkness) was the signaling of the beginning of the New Year. The Babylonians celebrated with Akitu, a religious festival with eleven different rituals, one for each day.

Around 46 B.C., Julius Caesar decided January 1 was to be the first day of the year, bringing to light the Julian calendar and honoring Janus, the Roman god of beginnings. Janus had two faces; one allowed him to look back to the past and the other to look forward to the future. The Romans would sacrifice to Janus, participate in wild parties and even give one another gifts! (Did you know that Caesar even had to add 90 extra days to the year in order to realign the Roman calendar with the sun?!)

Living with a sinful nature, one that we are truly born with, we are always trying to be better, do better, look better, talk better, you get the idea. We never feel we are truly good enough. And you know what? We really are not! Look at what the Apostle Paul had to say about it in the Book of Romans:

“And I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. I want to do what is right, but I can’t. I want to do what is good, but I don’t. I don’t want to do what is wrong, but I do it anyway.

Just as with New Year’s resolutions, it is done with good intention.

We want to…

  • lose weight
  • stop smoking
  • exercise more
  • take better care of ourselves
  • save more money
  • read the Bible all the way through
  • pay it forward
  • be nice to our impossible co-worker
  • take the stairs
  • have family dinner
  • de-clutter
  • make coffee at home
  • sponsor an orphan
  • give to missions
  • go to bed earlier
  • stop gossiping
  • call instead of text

And the list goes on and on and on. We may really intend to change but as the saying goes, nine times out of ten, we fail. True, there are self-help books and tons of material to help us through some of those get-healthier, live longer, eat better resolutions but to CHANGE matters of the heart? We cannot do it without God.

Paul speaks of a turn-around when Jesus stopped him cold on the road to Damascus, he explains it in Philippians:

“But whatever was to my profit I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. What is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ…”

He says he made a change, he lost all things! He goes on to say he considered them rubbish, the word Σκύβαλον, giving reference to manure, dung. That word is used only one time in the New Testament!

Does Jesus even care about our New Year's Resolutions?

Paul was being quite dramatic when he speaks of laying down EVERYTHING that he might GAIN Christ! He finishes his thought by saying, “…and be found in him not having a righteousness of my own, that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ—the righteousness that comes from God and is by faith.” Philippians 3:7-9 NIV.

Not a righteousness of our own, but righteousness from being made right by God and faith in Jesus Christ.

So, there is not anything wrong with having new goals and new aspirations at all. The Bible says to be renewed! “Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me.” Psalms 51:10. And taking care of the Body, the Mind and the Spirit are all good things.

When you make a New Year’s resolution this year, consider your priorities and remember the most important thing to change is your commitment to Jesus Christ.

Does He mean everything to you or do you fit Him in where it is convenient?

Do you talk to Him every day or only when you are in need?

Is He first on the list in the morning or an afterthought as you doze off?

If He isn’t Lord of everything then He isn’t Lord at all and that would be the best change you or I could make.

Seems everything else falls into place when we put Him first and that He DOES care about! Tomorrow we will look at Part TWO of this resolution thing and the best scripture I could find to support the tradition. You might be surprised!

DF cover side viewWhat kind of resolutions are you making for the New Year? Do they include fasting and praying more? Of course you need my book, The Daniel Fast, A Devotional! Three things I learned in Haiti that forever change Christmas for me

Merry Christmas to you all! I am in Tennessee, just south of Nashville, where my beautiful, expectant daughter-in-love is hosting Christmas in her new home this year. My Three Sons will be around the table, along with Rachel’s sweet mother and of course, The Sweetheart.

What’s on the menu? Rachel and her mother are fabulous cooks so we are excited!

Beef Burgundy
Loaded Mashed Potatoes
Dressing
Asparagus
Homemade Rolls
Desserts!

For a moment I wanted to share a thought on this favorite day of the year.

I just returned from Haiti last week and Haiti was life changing. You are not surprised? Me either.

My friend Bonnie had warned me it would affect my heart. I thought I was prepared but how can you truly prepare yourself for the devastation that surrounds every day life in a third world (some call Haiti a fifth world) country?

Before I go on, let me say there were plenty of beautiful things to see on the island country of Haiti! The mountains, the ocean, the views are just breathtaking.

We were able to visit a resort while we were there that was just gorgeous, but on the other side of the barbed wire-topped wall was just more poverty and sadness.

Your heart hurts because you feel so helpless, can do so little to make a difference and you want to take all of the orphans (and some of the adults!) home with you.

So, this Christmas, I have some takeaways from my Haiti trip that I feel will forever change Christmas for me.

3 things

  1. Family.  If you have one, you have everything. Almost all of the children at the orphanages we visited had lost their parents in the earthquake in 2010. If they were not affected by the earthquake then they were there because their family could not afford to feed them. The sad thing is that many days in the orphanage they only receive one meal. So when I gather with my family for the holidays I am one of the most blessed creatures on the planet.

  2. Stuff. I have too much of it. Everywhere. I downsized a few years ago when we moved to the country of Latvia for a year. It was originally to be for a longer stay so I sold almost all of my furniture and kept the bare minimum. But I live in a country of plenty and very little want. If we WANT it, we GET it. And so there is stuff that we do not need and do not use and others not so far away that cannot comprehend the “wealth” that we have. The things we easily throw away reminds me of those around the world that would love to be waiting to catch our Leftovers.

  3. Love. It is infectious. Watching the children throng anyone who came into their compound, into their world, was overwhelming. We were told to be prepared for the constant touching and hugging and literally hanging-on-for-dear-life grips they would surround us with. But I wasn’t prepared for the desperation in their eyes for the simplest touch. Just a hug, just to be able to hold our hand for a little while, sit on my lap (without a diaper or underwear) or lean their head on my shoulder was pure comfort. And it made me think of Jesus saying, “…Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 18:3

The thought is simple but it is sincere. We are blessed. So blessed. If we have our families, food on the table, roof over our head and all the things we take for granted every day, we are some of the wealthiest people on Planet Earth. Knowing there are people that do NOT have these things causes me to pause today and say, “Thank you, Lord.”

Then it causes me to stop and remind myself, if I didn’t have all of these things would I still be thankful, would I still be happy and would I still serve Him?

Even if everything is taken away from us tomorrow, if tragedy strikes, if our world is turned upside down, Jesus will still be God and still in control. In that we take great comfort.

On this most wonderful day of the year, before we tear into our gifts, let’s pause and be thankful for a God that is with us every day, not just Christmas. That He came, He gave, He loved and He died so that we could have HOPE. And one day soon that HOPE will return for His Bride, the Church!

How, where and who is gathered around your table today? We would love to hear! Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas.

When God calls you to stay on the mountain

We just returned from Haiti and are sharing adventures and thoughts from our trip. You can read my first post here!

When God calls you to stay on the mountain

“You’re off to Great Places!
Today is your day!
Your mountain is waiting,
So… get on your way!”
― Dr. Seuss, Oh, The Places You’ll Go!

We had quite the adventure on our trek to church on Sunday in Haiti. The missionaries we were staying with are the superintendents of the work of the United Pentecostal Church International in Haiti and oversee some 600 different churches. They had decided ahead of time to visit one of the works in St. Marc, about an hour and a half from where they live in Bon Repo.

Almost all of the roads in Haiti are horrendous. And by that I mean you must hold on, not just to your hat, but keep your seat as well if you don’t want to end up in the floorboard. We had been on a few decent highways but Sunday we were in for the ride of a lifetime. (This is the other car in our party with Missionaries Ron and Terry Brian, my sons Korey and Kris and other ministers.)

IMG_5172

We traveled in two vehicles, eleven of us in our party. Along the way you must watch out for the hundreds of thousands of people you pass just standing at the side of the road, walking to their destination or attempting to sell you something if you slow down even the littlest bit. This time it wasn’t the peddlers that stopped us, we had a tire blow out!

We pulled over and were immediately surrounded by helpers. Aware of the heat, the men in our group, who were dressed for church, decided it would be worth it to pay these eager assistants rather than sweat through their clothes and be covered in grease. Three kind young men had that tire off and the full-sized spare back on in no time. We paid them well and were back on the road again.

My friend, Bonnie, who was making her eleventh trip to Haiti in four years, couldn’t resist making friends with this little girl and giving her a tiny doll that she had stashed in her purse for hopeful occasions.

Now it was time to start the climb up the mountain. Pictures do not begin to do it justice, not only is it steep but it is such rough terrain I was contemplating walking instead of the treacherous ride in a four-wheel drive! Thankfully I was able to see some interesting sites along the way.

Arriving at the church, they were already in full swing. Service began at 6:30 a.m.! We had left the house at 6:45, since the first half of their service is Sunday School, and we made it there by nine with our unplanned stop along the way. When we entered the building we were ushered to the platform even though those of us who were not ministers begged to sit in the congregation. But, we didn’t want to offend our hosts, so all eight of us, plus our interpreter, went to chairs lined up behind the podium. Admittedly, we would have rather sat in the congregation because we couldn’t see the young people that sang or much of anything else.

But they had church!

They sang forever and a day but it was all good. They prayed and prayed some more and then The Sweetheart was blessed to be able to minister in that service. He loves preaching with an interpreter and Richardson (pronounced Re-CHARD-son) is one of the best. We had such a good time with him this week.

Afterward, the ladies had prepared a meal for us; I was nervous since there were no facilities and Haitian food is so spicy and I have a nervous stomach…get the picture? But they did have plantains, which are mild and tasty and a couple of other things I could eat. They sat a beautiful table and just outdid themselves trying to please us.

The boys were fascinated by the donkey, or burro, that was tied up right behind the church. He made for some great pictures!

This is my friend Bonnie…lover of God, lover of children and now? Lover of donkeys. She’s the best.

And my favorite part of the day was when a young lady came carrying in this little bundle of joy! Isn’t he precious!

When God wants you to stay on the mountain

haiti church 30This is Marie Carmen on the left with Bonnie. Marie Carmen is a song leader, hostess and servant of God. She was most hospitable.

Marie Carmen lives on this mountain. It is not the most desirable location in Haiti. Such a struggle to get up there, such a struggle to live. She would like to have a husband, and several have been suggested for her, but if they won’t climb the mountain she is not interested. Her calling is to this church, to this people and she will not leave, even for love and personal happiness.

This stuck with me as we drove down the hillside (which was almost worse than going up!). To call this place primitive would be an understatement, to actually love living here would be unfathomable to most of us reading this today. But people like the pastor and his wife and Marie Carmen pour their lives into helping those less fortunate and introducing them to the Savior.

We refer to mountains in our spiritual lives as two different things, depending on what we are going through. Some say the valley is the low place, the difficult, the somber and they can’t wait to get back to the mountaintop, meaning they have made it through their struggle and now they can dance with Jesus (you understand my point). Others say that there is a mountain in their way, it can’t be moved, it is impossible to get over, around or through. They liken a mountain to the obstacle in their life that they can’t control or change.

But when we choose to conquer the mountain, to turn it into something positive, to see what needs to be changed, what needs to go or stay, then God can use it to teach us, mold us, make us into something more like Him.

Look at this poem by Howard Simon:

The low lands call
I am tempted to answer
They are offering me a free dwelling
Without having to conquer
The massive mountain makes its move
Beckoning me to ascend
A much more difficult path
To get up the slippery bend
I cannot choose both
I have a choice to make
I must be wise
This will determine my fate
I choose, I choose the mountain
With all its stress and strain
Because only by climbing
Can I rise above the plain
I choose the mountain
And I will never stop climbing
I choose the mountain
And I shall forever be ascending
I choose the mountain
howard simon

True, there isn’t really a place in Haiti that offers luxury and comfort. But choosing to live on this mountain means there isn’t sporadic electricity like other places we visited, there is NO electricity. There is NO running water. There are no sidewalks or paved roads or walking paths. For as difficult as life is down below in the valley, it is even more strenuous on the mountain. But rather than looking down at what could be, Marie Carmen is committed to her calling and making a difference where God has planted her.

Don’t begrudge the mountains that God puts in your way!

The grass isn’t always greener on the other side. If where you are at is where God wants you to be then fulfill that purpose! Choose the mountain and realize that by answering that call, whatever that call is, you can rise above the obstacles and find the favor of God in your calling.

Some day He might speak to that mountain and call you to a lush, green valley. But until then, know He is working all things for your good; He is in control and you are His hands and His feet to a lost and dying world.

Trust Him!

Enjoy these super short clips of our service!
